Newfane United Methodist Church
Our Newfane Methodist Church finds its origins in the little Methodist Class-Meetings begun in the school house across Eighteen-Mile Creek, south of the Village at Adams Mills in the year 1832. Today the area is better known as Tompkins Mills, however both the schoolhouse and the buildings for the mills are long gone.
We understand that this little group of Methodists found a place to meet here in the Village in 1842, and on April 22, 1844, were duly organized into a Methodist Episcopal Church.
The first church building – Cobblestone – was directed immediately on the same site as our current building at the corner of Main Street and Charlotteville road (East Avenue). This first building was replaced in 1905, but the second building burned in 1931. The present house of worship was built just as soon as possible, then, on the old foundations.
Our Church School building was built in 1956, and the parsonage, originally across Main Street from the Church, was replaced by a new home on Corwin Avenue in 1963.
Based on the April 22, 1844 date we can say we enter what our 175th year on April 22, 2019, but in reality, Methodism had begun it’s good work in the Newfane vicinity more like 186 years ago.
May God make us a life to the challenge the years ahead for being His Church.
